Next up in my line of First Impressions is Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, the latest generic light novel adaptation from Madhouse. Madhouse is known for having done anime from pretty much every genre; some of them have turned out amazing, and some absolutely awful. While the actual quality itself is what’s in question here, the success of Mahouka is guaranteed. It’s based on a popular light novel and has a large cast including many cute girls, one of them being the biggest seller of them all- a little sister character. In my opinion, Mahouka can go one of two ways- the way of Sword Art Online (AKA “The Bad Way”), or it can go the way of Toaru Majutsu no Index (AKA “The Good Way”). Should Mahouka go “The Bad Way”, it will end up absolutely, irredeemably, terrible. It will also become an extreme success in Japan and overseas, move over 40,000 copies per volume, and make it on Toonami within a year. Should it go “The Good Way”, it will end up very enjoyable, maybe even to point of “very good”, and also be successful, though not as successful. In this case it will probably move more like 25,000 copies per volume, and will have a DVD/BD-only release overseas within two years. As it is now, it has the potential to be good and to be awful. There’s only one way to find out, and that’s by watching it.
In this “First Impressions”, I will make my way through the episode using screenshots and commentary.
Cool, a gun! It’s probably magical.
So, basically, humans make magic into technology, WWIII happens, thermonuclear destruction is narrowly avoided, and now this is Earth. And all the countries want magic users. Japan is independent as always (unless you’re counting Code Geass).
What is this, Night Wizard? Oh yeah, and this gun can blow up islands.
Hey, a title card!
And here’s our main character.
First few minutes in and it already has incest.
Not that it’s a bad thing.
My little sister can’t have better grades than me!
Shingeki no Mahouka
420 BLAZE IT
Here we go, time for My Girlfriend is the President
plot harem thickens!
Oh god, the CGI
The harem just keeps expanding…
I see he has his priorities straight.
And his priorities are to look good for the ladies.
My little sister can’t be making a speech!
Screw speeches, time for a nap
Their mother was in labor for over a month, apparently.
A CHALLENGER APPROACHES
Apparently talking to someone with worse grades than you is a social no-no.
And the incest continues.
I can tell this is going to be a large part of the show.
So apparently their parents only acknowledge the sister, and she’s angry that they don’t pay any attention to the main character. And when she gets mad she makes everything freeze.
And here’s a black title card.
GOTTA GO FAST
And out of nowhere, kung fu
Apparently there’s still ninjas in the future.
Even a ninja should know that “moe” doesn’t exist in real life.
These ninjas are friendly though. They were only training.
Little sisters always make lunch. Why don’t I have a little sister to make me lunch?
Just livin the supah hackah life
A new friend appears!
Even the teacher is in the harem!
The cool kids, laying down the law
And more incest.
So the “cool kids” with good grades are trying to put the “Weeds” in their place. And it’s bad.
HE’S GOT A GUN!
LOL NOPE, STICK BEATS GUN
…and it ends with the student council intervening, and the main character shows off his skills at misleading authority. TUNE IN NEXT WEEK!
Anyway, I thought that this was a pretty solid first episode especially for a non-comedy-centric light novel adaptation. Based on the premise and the story so far there are many ways this can go wrong, especially since everyone but the MC are stock characters, and even at that the MC isn’t very interesting. I probably owe it to myself to watch this all the way through just so I can know what I’m saying when I discuss it, but we’ll see where this one goes.
